Title: Holes Author: Louis Sachar
Rating: 🍩 (44/50)

Summary
Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center, Camp Green Lake. The boys “build character” by spending all day, everyday digging holes five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no Lake at Camp Green Lake. But there sure are a lot of holes.
It doesn’t take long for Stanley to realize there’s more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. What could be buried under a dried-up lake? Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption.
Thoughts (for when you’re done reading, contains spoilers)
LOVED it. 💖
Without a doubt, my favorite character would be the wonderful Hector Zeroni. Lots of people underestimated him because he wasn’t very talkative. But in truth, he was extremely intelligent and kind.
But really, it was the relationship between Zero and Caveman that showed the reader what good people they both were.
And for Stanley, Camp Green Lake did build character. When Stanley first got there he had a low self-esteem and wasn’t very confident. He came out a brave and happy kid with a new best friend.
My favorite part was when the two reached “God’s thumb” and the Yelants curse was broken. I like how things 100 years ago affected the current story. Like when Zero and Stanley found the wild onions. Or when Mr. Yelnats named his invention Sploosh. Good writing technique on your part, Louis Sachar!
